After decades of silence surrounding mental health and the stigma around admitting the need to address human mental health, more efforts are being made to find safe and natural ways to deal with stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma. Two popular and natural solutions are meditation and asana techniques, also known as yoga. Here’s what you need to know about the effects of meditation and yoga on mental health.

Understanding that your adult suffering and conflicts are a direct result of your childhood upbringing and beliefs is key to healthy communication. You must understand the way that you perceive the world. Once you understand your unique perception of the world, acceptance of self and others comes naturally. Acceptance of self and others is the key to healthy communication in any relationship.
PTSD or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a direct result of any experience which you perceive threatens your life. It is correlated with the human “fight or flight” response. It creates an unreasonable fear of life which often hinders the person from engaging with certain day to day activities. What some see as a normal interaction a person suffering from PTSD can find overwhelming. PTSD in the past was thought to only affect soldiers in military combat. It is now known that it can range from childhood discipline—yelling and spanking to rape, or simply witnessing an accident. Trauma cannot be measured therefore the response to trauma is an individualized experience which carries no one method of treatment.
In my travels I have found it curious that the moment people experience discomfort or suffering, how quickly they run towards what they perceive will make them feel better. They convert from one religion to another, from one yoga practice to another, from one guru to another, from a Christian name to an Indian name or vice versa, from Christianity to Buddhism and the list goes on.
If one could run so quickly from their suffering it would indeed be a happy world. Instead, nature requires you to understand who you were, who you became and who you truly are. For transformation to happen an effortless flow within your consciousness must be established.
The word Yoga must be looked at not as a word but as an experience. Yoga means Union with God.
Yoga is so sacred a union that the experience is above all logic, intelligence, words and wisdom.
Union or Yoga cannot be described in words because it is a divine experience. This is my humble attempt to put such sacredness into words in order to bring understanding to this experience. The importance of understanding this union is key to a balanced asana practice.
Yoga is a transformational experience. It is when you are no longer divided by concepts of right and wrong, positive and negative. It is when your mind is so clear that the world becomes one with you and you with it. It is a heightened awareness beyond the common human mind.
Many adults still deny that their childhood has anything to do with how they feel as an adult. It is always someone else’s fault.
What is denial? Denial is a mental wall we build when we are unwilling to accept change that has happened, is happening or needs to happen. It is a way of avoiding emotions arising from an experience that makes you uncomfortable, uneasy, anxious or unsure.
A choice is not about right or wrong. It is a fear of the unknown which arises, resulting in loss of trust in one’s self. When you lose trust in yourself it triggers a domino effect of insecurities that lie in your subconscious mind. You remain in denial of anything in your subconscious until you expand your awareness.
